The Rite of Spring

$30.00 CAD

"The Rite of Spring" (Le Sacre du printemps) is inspired by the dark splendour of Igor Stravinsky's avant garde and infamous concert ballet choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky for the Ballets Russes in 1913. This story centres around Russian pagan folklore and the rites and rituals on the advent of spring. It represents the creative forces of spring which can sometimes be disruptive, destructive and volatile. This is a catalyst which makes space and allows for new creation. It’s also represents the deep connection between the earth and humans.

My print is directly inspired by the colours represented in the dancers' pagan costumes, the intensity of the music, and the sound of birdsong particularly in the beginning of the concert. It's this birdsong and the blossoming flowers that signify and usher in this powerful season of new beginnings, birth and creation.

Sidenote: If you're unfamiliar with The Rite of Spring and it's infamous history please do yourself a favour and look it up because it is truly wild and inspiring. :)

The Print:

This is a 3 colour REDUCTION linocut print. That means all the layers were created by carving from a single linoleum block. Because it is a reduction print, it is a limited edition of 5 and the linoleum block can never be printed the same way again. This print is hand-carved and hand-pressed. That makes it extra special.

I mixed non-toxic oil-based relief inks and printed the lino block on a lightweight, natural white 120 g/m acid-free printmaking paper. The paper size is 8" x 10". The print size is approximately 6" x 9".

Each print is numbered and signed on the front bottom of the print. Limited edition of 5!

Each print will be shipped with a backing board, wrapped in plastic and enclosed in a hard mailer.
